Summer Challenge Event Ideas
Places to Register Donors in Your Local Community
- Festivals: Are there any festivals happening in your hometown this summer? See if they’ll allow you to table on behalf of SODA at the event, or reach out to your local Donate Life team and see if you can partner/volunteer with them at these types of events.
- Local 5ks:Many of our SODA chapters have had a lot of success tabling at 5ks It’s a great way to educate communities outside of your campus and register new organ donors who are already inclined to support nonprofits.
- DMV: See if your DMV will allow you to table and talk with individuals about organ donation
- Need to get in contact with someone at the DMV? Ask your OPO if they can help you get in contact with someone.
- Programming unique to your community: Maybe you have a local farmers market you can table at or your place of worship will let you table after service. You know your community best and can do something not listed here.
Educational Events for the Summer
- Donuts and Discussion: You don’t need to be on campus for this event! Maybe you can do some myth-busting at your place of worship or gather some hometown friends together and talk about organ donation.
- Pizza and Perspectives or speaker event. Maybe your local library or community center has some space you can rent for an event.
- OPOs can still be a great resource for finding speakers even when off-campus. If you need an introduction to your hometown OPO, let us know by emailing students@sodanational.org.
- Time frame: 10 minutes arriving and socializing, 40-minute presentation, 10 minute Q&A session.
- Movie night: Why not knock out two summer challenges and organize a group movie night in your community? We highly recommend the movie 2Hearts (1 hour 40 minutes), Living with Kidney Failure (40 minutes), and the documentary We Speak Life (15 minutes).
As always, you can reach out to students@sodanational.org if you have any questions, and don’t forget to request funds and supplies for your summer event through the event fund!
