The Big Question: Quantifying the Ant population - identifying, assessing their diversity to monitor Environmental health.
Why ants as bioindicators?
- Diverse group.
- Make up a large proportion of biomass.
- Perform diverse ecological functions (seed dispersal, pollination, soil porosity, etc.).
- Easily identified as an ant when compared to other invertebrates.
- Play important role in establishment of food chains.
- Sensitive to climatic changes.
Indicators for following environmental impacts
- Forest fire.
- Deforestation.
- Agriculture intensification.
- Minning.
- Urbanization.
How?
Depending on ants' response to change in environment, they are classified into two categories:
- Specialists species - have specific ecological requirements such as climate and vegetation structure, in order to inhabit an area.
