Managing any group of people often means wearing lots of different hats! Apart from strictly providing design education, you also have to build a community of creatives who can rely on and trust each other — human-centered design is all about people, so make sure you care about those around you 💖
Prep work
In order to teach your chapters, make sure that your board members/education directors get familiar with the module content before the respective meetings. This doesn't mean you have to become an expert and do tons of research, it just means getting comfortable with the module content and having a game plan on how to present it.
Teaching
The next step is actually teaching the content to your chapter. We'll provide training on how to effectively teach others — the most important thing is to go in prepared and make sure everyone is on the same page. Reach out if you need any assistance!
Reflection
Every group of students is different, so we may not have all the answers on how to best teach your particular chapter. Ask your members for feedback, take note of questions that are asked, and see if everyone is comfortable and engaged. Use that information to make future meetings even better.
Socials
Your chapter may decide to hold socials or events internally! Socials are a great way to help members get to know each other, especially when we're remote. Online games (like Skribbl.io, Spyfall, and Among Us) or other activities (like powerpoint parties, club 'dinners,' and paint nights) can bring people closer together.
Community building
Being aware of the community you're creating and regularly pulse-checking is important to make sure that your members not only learn design, but also feel comfortable sharing their work with the club. Doing things like member check-ins, critique days, or even just casual study hour hangouts can help foster community in virtual settings.
IDOT is a pretty small team of people who want to make IDOT the best possible experience for you. We really value your feedback — in modules, how we run, how you chapters are going, and in anything else you want us to know. You'll also have an SRC advisor, a member of our Internal team who works specifically with your chapter.
Our Education team creates content for you to learn from, so we want to make sure our modules are effective, clear, and engaging. Through monthly module testing, you'll work directly with our team members to help us iterate on our modules.
Beyond education, we want to make sure all our processes are as smooth, comfortable, and equitable as possible. Throughout the semester, we'll send out various feedback forms for things like orientation, competitions, and more.
Once you join IDOT, you'll be assigned an SRC advisor to work specifically with your chapter. They will host weekly calls with you throughout the semester to help keep you up to date, answer any questions, and provide individual support for your chapter.
