A sketchbook should function as your visual diary throughout the course. It will be a notebook to collect your own research material on artists, topics introduced during class, and everything else that caught your attention. It should become an account of the course but also a source of inspiration.

Make drawings of what surrounds you, of what you think is beautiful or interesting. Have a look at ordinary things, draw a representation of the music you are listening to, make photo’s, collect images etc. Self-direct your collection, expand your horizon.

Try to analyse and interpret these images for example by studying their technique, composition, content, meaning etc.

Focus on images or photos that trigger ideas, opinions or thoughts, instead of choosing them merely for their atmosphere or beauty. Think of how you can use or alter these images into an artistic statement. For example, make a small drawing in which you capture the essence of a picture, of what you think is visually interesting in that particular image.

Use your sketchbook to write down ideas about art and design, reflections on the assignments, quotes, reviews of art, books, music, theatre and other things you think are interesting.
