“Your first line of survival: staying connected.”
Staying connected is essential for everything—mobile banking, transport, navigation, and communication. Getting a US SIM card and sorting your paperwork immediately on arrival will help you access services and stay in touch with friends, family, and your team.
Pick a SIM provider:
Popular choices for immigrants: T-Mobile, Mint Mobile, AT&T, Verizon. SIMs can be bought at their stores, electronic retailers (Best Buy, Target), or at SFO airport kiosks.
Activate eSIM or physical SIM:
For eSIM, use provider apps or scan a QR code at a store. iPhone and Android guides are available here: eSIM.net setup, Apple activation guide. For physical SIMs, insert and follow on-screen instructions.
Port your Indian number:
You can keep your Indian number active for OTPs and WhatsApp via Airtel International Roaming or comparable plans for initial weeks. Indian number porting guide: Paytm MNP steps. Most just switch WhatsApp to US SIM once settled.
Paperwork checklist:
Passport
US Visa + most recent I-94 (download from CBP portal or see I-94 guide)
US address (hotel/temporary works)
Sometimes carriers may ask for these at purchase; keep them handy.
