On September 18th 2024, Aswin A. K., the sole developer behind Extant Notion, officially began work on Sick Street Racer, with the aim of making something carrying the spirit of 2000s racing games. It is Extant Notion’s first commercial project, as well as Extant Notion’s first large scale project made with the Unity Engine.
For the first year of development, time was mostly spent on making the game’s core systems, like the UI system, map system, audio handler, freeroam and race mode systems, and many other quality of life features. With most of the core gameplay systems tackled, the focus for the next year will be on getting the main “game loop” functional, with races to do and opportunities to interact with NPC racers.
All of the 3D assets were created in-house using Blender and they were textured using Inkscape and Photoshop. The UI was designed completely in Inkscape, from the initial mockup stage, to the final sprites.
The art style and general vibe was decided early on in development - something along the gritty lines of Need For Speed: Most Wanted (2005) mixed with the artsy and stylistic elements from Persona 5, Jet Set Radio, Automodellista, Colin Mcrae: DiRT 2, Need For Speed: Unbound, among others. The car models have a mid-poly art style, with each model ranging between 5k to 10k triangles. The character art was designed by Aswin’s classmate Vishnu V. Nambiar. They met in college while they were pursuing their postgraduate degrees.
