Maps generally have 3 to 5 shrines.

To capture a shrine, monsters must stand near the shrine (and greatly outnumber humans), gradually reducing the shrine's power. If humans greatly outnumber monsters, the shrine regenerates power.

When a shrine is destroyed, the monster spawn is moved up to the destroyed shrine, forcing humans to retreat due to monster spawn protection. Monsters receive a temporary speed buff after respawning in order to make the run back to battle feel tedious. Monster spawn protection deals a lot of damage to humans. However, if monsters venture past the current active shrine, they will be instantly killed by shrine protection.
