POLICY INFORMATION

Purpose

At Paint Pots, we believe children learn best through play, exploration, conversation and meaningful interactions with adults and other children. Screens are not part of our everyday curriculum and are only used where they clearly enhance learning or support individual children's needs.

For children the official guidance states:

under 2 years: screen time should be avoided altogether other than in exceptional circumstances such as a video call with parents and carers

2-5 years: screen time should be limited to 1 hour a day, less if possible

Our Approach

Children under two years of age will not routinely use screens within the setting, except in exceptional circumstances such as communication with parents or the use of assistive technology.

• For children aged two to five years, screen use will be minimal, purposeful and carefully planned.
• Screens will never replace high-quality adult interaction, storytelling, singing, imaginative play, outdoor learning or physical activity.
• Screen use will always be supervised and adults will actively engage with children by talking, questioning and encouraging discussion.
• To be aware that most screen time would be used at home.

Where screens are used, they will:

• have a clear educational purpose linked to children's learning
• be used for short periods only
• use age-appropriate, slow-paced, advert-free content
• be checked by staff before use
• never be left playing in the background.
