5e D&D is the most played game in the world, and we are not haters over here! It’s a great way to introduce players to the Project without having them learn a new system. Certain types of stories are easier, and certain types of stories are more difficult within its ruleset, but we certainly want Bullets and Brimstone to be fun to play with 5e.
If you are intending to run a game in 5e, a few things to keep in mind.
- Not every Cleric Domain or spellcasting subclass will be on theme.
- Lots of battles and conflicts to balance out the short and long rest economy, as the core system intends, may pull the game away from the western feel and into the realm of high fantasy.
- Reskinning crossbows as guns for proficiency bonuses is perfectly fine! If you want to give all classes a proficiency in hand crossbows, that may also help.
- USE COVER. This is an often neglected mechanic in D&D games and an essential part of making a gunfight feel good. Many beautiful maps lack sufficiently interesting pieces of cover, so you may need to add them. I recommend bumping the AC bonus from cover by +2 to really encourage its use
- Reskin everything! The balance and the flavour are not the same thing!
- The subclasses created for 5e are all meant to feel in theme and should work well together. If you are running a one-shot, these are a good place to start.
