Practice Based Research Game Project

Project Name: Mioritica

Brief:

Mioritica is a single player 2D side-scroller game where you play as a fairytale heroine followed by her sheep sidekick, on her quest to attain the power of ressurection. Her main skill is transforming into different creatures by gathering objects belonging to those.

I was inspired by the world of Romanian fairytales and mithology and all they include: monsters, heroes, villains, settings and current motifs. I wanted to build a vast world and a game rich in lore, with the focus on the heroine. For this I had to research a various number of topics.

Goals:

Decision-Making

I had to research and make conscious decisions about the design of my game. As well as following what feels right, I had to think about why I’m including certain elements into the game and explain my decision-making.

Building Skills

By the end of Semester 2 I want to be able to make my own game from start to finish. For this I have to improve in areas that are not my best: coding, marketing, animations and respecting deadlines. I also want to make this game part of my portfolio and increase my chances of getting into the industry.

Marketing:

I wanted to create a game that had an unusual theme in the area of fantasy, and that has both happy visuals and darker references. I hope it will:

Empower female players;

Attract platformer fans;
