Today, let’s look at something just as important, Rhesus factor from blood groups.
Every blood group has something called the Rhesus factor (Rh factor).
When you say you’re blood group A, are you A+ or A-
That “positive” or “negative” is your Rhesus factor, and it’s a protein found on red blood cells.
👉🏻If you have it, you’re Rh positive (A+, B+, AB+, or O+).
👉🏻If you don’t, you’re Rh negative (A-, B-, AB-, or O-).
Now here’s why it matters.
If a woman who is Rh negative gets pregnant for a man who is Rh positive, the baby could inherit the father’s Rh-positive blood.
The mother’s body might see the baby’s blood as foreign and produce antibodies against it.
This is called Rhesus incompatibility.
These antibodies can destroy the baby’s red blood cells, causing serious health problems or even death if not managed early.
The good news is that it’s preventable.
Doctors can give a simple injection called Anti-D immunoglobulin (RhoGAM) to protect both the mother and baby.
So, just as it’s important to know your genotype before marriage or pregnancy, the same goes for your blood group and Rhesus factor.
