  1. Open Research

Open research represents a new set of principles and methodologies for greater collaboration, transparent and responsible sharing of research findings, and access to and re-use of research data, materials or outputs.

Open research comprises openness throughout the research lifecycle, through making research methodology, publications freely available online (open access), in addition to the underlying research code (open source) and data (open data). Committing to open access, open source, and open data is an ethical and practical pathway towards a more equitable, inclusive scholarly communication and knowledge creation.

  1. Open Access - Open Data - Open Source

Open access ( OA ) means making research outputs freely available so anyone can benefit from reading and using research.

As an AHRC funded project, the Congruence Engine needs to comply with the newly published  UKRI’s new open access policy for research publications, acknowledging funding from its councils last August. It applies to peer-reviewed research articles submitted for publication from April 2022. From 1 January 2024, a new open access requirement will apply for:

According to this, all research outputs will be published under a CC-BY-SA licence, to ensure that all of the contributions arising from the project’s action research methods receive due recognition and acknowledgement and that the data and publications can be interrogated, reused, built upon and adapted, leading to new research findings, development and innovation.

As for software, original code and data produced as part of the project, the Congruence Engine adopts and encourages all project partners to adopt an open source / open software approach. We are using open source software, tools and platforms for our investigations, as much as possible, while assigning open source licensing to the code produced so that anyone can inspect, modify, and enhance.

Regarding the data provided to the project from project partners, the copyright and licensing framework of the original data provider/ data partner must be respected and kept throughout the project’s duration. Data storage and management mechanisms have been put in place on a case-by-case basis to ensure inclusive & respectful data processing and publishing, that will acknowledge individual institutions and/or datasets’ policies.
