We'll periodically ask you to record demos for us during the semester.

These demos do not have to show finished, polished features. We want to see what you've got so far — maybe that'll be a lot of little things, or maybe it'll be one large thing. Maybe it'll just be a bunch of tests passing. Maybe it'll be something you can only see from the server console with pdb or print statements. That's all okay. We just want to see where you are in your project, but in video form.

What You'll Need

Screen Recording: OBS

We want you to use OBS to record your video. It's free, open source, and available for all major platforms:

Open Broadcaster Software | OBS

This is a commonly-used screen recording tool, often used for Twitch, YouTube, and other services.

We prefer OBS because it gives great control over the resolution and bitrates of the videos. Other tools, like iMovie, can result in improperly-sized videos, bad bitrates, or other issues that are difficult to work with.

You must configure OBS correctly using the instructions below. DO NOT improvise! Follow them to the letter. If you have trouble with the screen recordings, talk to us.

Configuring OBS Correctly

Microphone

We strongly recommend you get some kind of external microphone. Laptop microphones are low-quality and not made for this. They also pick up mouse clicks, which are going to sound very loud. They'll overshadow your voice and make it hard to edit.
