Project Description Over the past six decades of Oil extraction in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, there have been series of challenges faced by communities both host and none host communities and these issues has resulted in various degrees of environmental degradation, health challenges and crisis not to mention communal clashes caused by the quest for ownership of lands where oil resources are found. Despite the fact that these areas are rich in natural resources, they are faced with health challenges that even medical personnel cannot explain.

However, even with these health crises, the communities impacted lack good healthcare facilities, and even those that have healthcare centres, they lack the needed man power and medical supplies hence this Healthcare outreach event aimed at providing basic healthcare equipment to a community healthcare Centre in Niger Delta region of Nigeria, Precisely Gelegele community.

Project History The nature of large natural resource extraction projects has often disrupted many aspects that affect both health and health determinants, including public health, society, and the ecosystems. Historically, the development of extractive activities in Nigeria over the past 6 decades has often been accompanied by negative social and health outcomes in the surrounding community, often termed “the resource curse.

So far, these host communities have been left without adequate healthcare equipment and services, and even those that have healthcare centres lack basic amenities and medications to meet the health needs of the community. This project focuses on meeting the healthcare needs of the Gelegele Community.

We hope to use the financial support provided to purchase equipment and medication to meet the health needs of the Gelegele community people who lack access to basic health equipment and services.

Fact

For the past 50 years, the Gelegele Community people have been faced with fossil fuel extractive activities with a gas flaring stack located at the heart of the community.

In a recent health analyses carried out in the community by TEAAF and some medical consultants we observed that over 80 percent of the community people were suffering from extractive pollution-related diseases such as skin diseases (skin rashes/ dry scally skins), while 75 percent of the children had scabies, coughs, and respiratory ailments. Another 90 percent complained of constant readiness of eyes, itching, and gradual loss of eyesight.

95 percent of the populace complained of malaria and high body temperatures, and others complained of general joint and body pain; eye cataracts were also prevalent in the community.

The medical personnel analyzed the data and determined that all these ailments are caused by the toxic emissions released from the gas flare stack located in the heart (center) of the community.

Even though there is a health centre in the community, the centre lacks basic medical equipment and medical supplies to effectively take care of the health needs of the community. Hence, there is an urgent need to provide the healthcare centres with basic equipment and supplies. read more here:
