Defining promotions at MUI

What ‘promotion’ means at MUI:

• Internal promotions are when an employee who is already working within the organization is promoted to a new position. This could include lateral movement between departments or functions rather than upward mobility (the more common understanding of ‘promotion’).
• Some combination of the following: re-titling, re-leveling, an increase in job responsibilities such as taking on a supervisory role and/or pay increases.

Promotions philosophy

Our promotion philosophy and processes are guided by four core pillars: FAIR, EQUITABILE, TRANSPARENT, & VALUES-ALIGNED

• We bias to internal promotion and development to foster a culture of learning and growth.
• We base promotions on concrete factors including:
  • Performance and impact: Assessing how individuals meet expectations and contribute to business results. We emphasize excellence rather than potential, as research indicates potential evaluations are more bias-prone and differ substantially by certain protected characteristics such as (but not limited to) gender or race.
  • Readiness: Evaluating an individual's qualifications and preparedness for the next level of their career ladder. Tenure is not a determining factor; readiness is determined by whether or not an individual has demonstrated the skill for and is executing at the next level of their career ladder; and for how long they’ve consistently done so (we suggest at least a 2-month period).
  • Values alignment: Considering how well individuals align with and promote company values.
  • Business justification: Assessing the benefits and opportunities for MUI in promoting the individual.
• We ensure equal opportunity and review for promotions by aligning promotion cycles with compensation reviews. These happen twice a year in [MONTH] & [MONTH]
• Out-of-cycle promotions may happen when it becomes evident that someone has been under-hired or there is a compelling business opportunity/justification for it.

Promotions process

Our promotions process consists of four phases: (1) Nomination, (2) Review, (3) Pay Benchmarking, and (4) Communicating the decision.

To nominate, folks are asked to write down their answers to a few questions, and send them via email to people-private@mui.com. We invite self-nominations alongside manager recommendations!
