Sometimes, I worry that I’m not the hero everyone thinks I am. The philosophers assure me that this is the time, that the signs have been met. But I still wonder if they have the wrong man. So many people depend on me. They say I will hold the future of the entire world on my arms. What would they think if they knew that their champion—the Hero of Ages, their savior— doubted himself? Perhaps they wouldn’t be shocked at all. In a way, this is what worries me most. Maybe, in their hearts, they wonder—just as I do. When they see me, do they see a liar?

In the bleak world of the Final Empire, ash falls from a red sky and the sun burns crimson. Lord Tresting, a cruel nobleman, oversees a plantation of skaa (peasant slaves) who work in a state of quiet apathy. During a visit from a high-ranking obligator (a tattooed religious bureaucrat/witness), Tresting brags about his harsh methods of control, including executing the families of runaways. To celebrate a successful business deal, Tresting plans to abuse a young skaa girl.
A mysterious skaa worker named Kelsier catches Tresting’s eye with a look of terrifying defiance before seemingly vanishing into the crowd. That night, Kelsier enters a skaa hovel, revealing himself as a "traveler" with arms covered in thin, raking scars—marks from the Pits of Hathsin, a notorious death camp.
The conversation is interrupted by the screams of the young girl being taken to Tresting’s manor. Despite Mennis’s warnings not to "waste energy" on a losing battle, Kelsier’s anger flares. Using Allomancy (burning "tin" in his stomach to enhance his senses), he tracks the screams. He tells the skaa he isn't there to lead a rebellion, but simply to "stir up a little trouble," and disappears into the night mists—a feat the skaa believe results in the loss of one's soul.
The next morning, the skaa discover the unthinkable:
Mennis takes command, ordering the terrified skaa to flee into the mists toward the eastern caves to find rebels. Kelsier’s "trouble" has effectively ended their life of slavery by making it impossible for them to stay, forcing a desperate bid for freedom.
