A community-led, neighbourhood-centric approach to public realm improvements in a heritage precinct. The impact indicators we focus our improvements on include, health, accessibility, stewardship and sense of pride rather than purely economic metrics.

PROJECT ORIGINS

The seeds of the initiative to improve the conditions of Thiruvanmiyur Mada Street were sown in 2022, from a conversation between two residents of the locality, who also happened to be Urban Designers. We were tired of the poor quality of the public realm and poor waste-management, debris dumping, and misuse of this very busy, historic area and decided to try an Asset-Based participatory design approach to improve our area. The initial data, research, and advocacy work were done in the first 6 months, as volunteer efforts. In 2023, we got in touch with Thiruvanmiyur Muthamizh Sangam, a local CBO well-connected with businesses in Mada Street & the Temple Trust. They further helped cement our relationship with MLAs, Ward Councillors, Temple Trustees and even volunteered time for data collection.
