Feel the sound as you are. Our bodies have vibrations, but we can't hear them in the air, so let's take the sound out. Our movements or existence as we are that can be expressed by sound or music.
This project was planned to awaken the senses in our body by converging multi-sensory communication that we do not usually recognize and rarely use. I have two adjustable ideas for this project.
1) Spatial Instruments There is a dark room that has invisible lines like strings of instruments. So, if someone is in the exact position, one of the note sounds is generated. As the number of people increases, the number of notes will increase. Also, people can control the pitch of the note or distort the sounds by moving their bodies.
2) bringing out our inner voice Instead of the specific notes, I can replace heartbeat sounds. People will realize the existence of others by hearing adding heartbeats. If more people enter the room, the heartbeat will be added and louder as a whole. Depending on people's distance, the sound can be adjusted; for instance, if Jon and Kate come closer to each other, the pace or the pitch of the heartbeats can be increased.
The room will be so dark that we can't see anything. We can sense our distance and how we are far from each other by hearing heartbeats in this room. We cannot hear them in real life because they exist deep in our bodies and mind. The heartbeat is a very private sound inside us. Personally, the subject of the heartbeat is a key matter. The heart is directly linked to our survival, and the heart's rate or pitch represents changes in our emotions, moods, and energy. When we're scared or excited for any reason (too unpleasant or too pleasant), it's fast and fluctuating. It sinks down slowly when we find stability or calm. It's so hidden inside us that no one else does notice. I think it's a very private hidden sound. We can put it out on this space.
I wonder how people feel about that. What would we feel if someone else's heartbeat sounds were exposed outside enough for us to hear from outside space? Does it make us nervous to be alone in a dark space with no one around? Does it make us nervous to be surrounded by many people? Or Does it make us feel relieved? Can we have reconsideration of what we feel about being with others by experiencing this project?
Quiet, dark space, people in variable volumes. Interaction between people and space, by using people’s movements or their existences, and sounds from the room caused by people. The number of audiences in the space or their movements control the sounds—their reaction to the change of sounds that result from themselves.
