15 THE INDEPENDENT PROJECT

Till the end presentation, the assignment is to develop an individual project. Content, and technique are free to decide. It’s important to create a clear outline of your project but still leave enough space to experiment. The process is as important as the end result. Your work can be anything, even a song, a written text, a series of photo’s, a performance, drawing, painting, sculpture...

The method of working should follow a certain order:

• First write down some keywords, what is the subject, what relates to this, which elements you want to accentuate, is it important to think of a target audience? Also include associations. Not everything has to follow the same logic, or the logic may become more clear during or after the project. So it’s also important to formulate questions about your subject.
• Second: Do some research, find artists designers who have worked on the same subjects. What makes their work special, what was their approach. What other kind of information can you find about your subject. Select one artist, a piece of work, ..., who you think is relevant to your project and involve your choice in your project. How is up to you.
• Start sketching, develop ideas, different strategies, what works best? Think about a presentation as well. Where and in what kind of space should your project ideally be shown? Make some sketches, 2D and scale models of this space. We will dedicate at least one les- son to work on this.

The final realisation: For the presentation you also have to write a small text. The format is a ‘Press text’, like art galleries send out for each new exhibition they show, see examples here.
