For the second project I have to create a poster displaying one of the articles from the universal declaration of human rights, focusing on typography.

Before creating any designs for this i researched the work of Josef Müller-Brockmann and Wim Crouwell, I researched into the styles that are used throughout their designs. I tried to understand what it was about their work that was inspiring and i did this by looking at some of their work that i found the most interesting and impactful.
For the second project in semester 1, I have to create a poster displaying one of the articles from the Universal declaration of human rights. I decided that the article that i would focus on would be either article 18 or 19, as both have a focus on freedom, specifically freedom of ones thoughts and beliefs.
Article 18 - Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.
OR
Article 19 - Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.
The reason why I wanted to focus on the idea freedom in my poster was because I thought that freedom could be represented in many different ways visually, first I started with creating a mind map to highlight the key elements I wanted to include in my poster and to show my initial ideas for how I wanted to design my poster.

I ultimately chose to focus on article 19 as I had more ideas about how I could design based on opinions and expressions, after I decided this I started to sketch some initial ideas for the design of my poster.

My initial idea was to display freedom through hand drawn flowing lines inspired by the shape of waves or the shape of rivers as they naturally form in unique ways and people cant stop them from forming, I liked this idea for freedom as it I thought it would show that everyone has their own unique opinion and other people cant effect how that opinion is formed. I also liked the idea of showing freedom through rivers as they can diverge and split which I thought could show that people can have opinions that differ from each other but that doesn't mean they have to be against each other that can connect with other people. With my idea of rivers I thought that I could use the shapes of different rivers around to world to reflect that opinions and expressions may differ around the world but these opinions still have the right to be shared and people can still connect with each other regardless of location through different forms of media, i.e. phones, tv’s, newspaper.
