Creating designs to represent and convey different words, using what we learnt about point, line and plane, to make these designs. Focusing on the simplification of forms and conveying my personal understanding of each word chosen.
My initial ideas for project 1 began with considering the quick point, line and plane experiments that we did in class in week 2., as these experiments helped me get familiar with figma so I knew roughly what I would be able to create for this project. Once I got the brief, for the point and line designs I selected what words I would be creating designs for these were, Multiply, Scale, Disperse, Rhythm, Frequency, and Asymmetry; for the plane designs I considered what I could represent in 5 planes. I I began by brainstorming what I associated with each word.

For the point section of this project, I selected the words, multiply, disperse and scale to create designs for from the brief. I began by drawing initial designs in my sketchbook:
For multiply I created my initial designs based off ways of displaying multiplications, i experimented with this through focusing on points, which almost created a target design, it also reminded me of the structure of electrons which I thought I could display in interesting ways if I was to develop that design further, maybe by showing the chemical make-up of something by showing the elements in it, I decided to research this for if I wanted to develop the idea in this way, these websites were helpful for understanding the structure of atoms, Structure of the atom - Atomic structure - AQA - GCSE Combined Science Revision - AQA Trilogy - BBC Bitesize, and for knowing the structure of each individual element, Protons Neutrons & Electrons of All Elements (List + Images) . I also experimented with displaying multiplications in a grid pattern with every layer in the grid doubling the number of points, but I didn't like my initial sketch and decided that if I was to develop that design further that I would start with the points in the centre of the design being larger and gradually getting smaller as the design fans out. My other initial experiment was focused on displaying the process of cell division and I researched this to understand the processes involved.
Cell Division: Mitosis & Meiosis, Different Phases of Cell Cycle - GeeksforGeeks, this website was helpful for explaining very simply the different stages of cell division and what happens at each stage. I initially thought of the process of mitosis as in each stage of division the cell splits more until they create 2 identical cells from 1 original cell, I thought this would display multiply well as in each stage of the number of cells double, I didn't think this initial design was that interesting but I think it could be more effectively shown over a bigger area/frame.

My initial design for disperse was very simply 2 points slowly moving away from each other but i thought that this design was quite simple and boring, and I decided I wanted to include a larger number of points in my designs as I thought that I could more effectively show the points dispersing if I started with a higher concentration of them. My second idea was the dispersion of light which I thought I could display by having gradually lighter points on a dark background to mimic shadows,
but later I thought of explosions and how light is dispersed through the clouds that they create. I liked these ideas as I felt that could be displayed effectively in both one single frame or across multiple connecting frames, I also thought that I could effectively use tone to add to these designs.
I found these websites while i was researching, they were helpful for understanding why explosions form in the way they do and why the cloud they create are shaped a specific way:

For scale my initial idea was to simply show a varying size of points in an interesting way, from this initial idea it reminded me of what a tunnel looks like, and I thought I could use scale to show perspective and use size and tone to make it look like the smallest point is further away.

Another one of my initial designs for scale was musical scales as I thought these could be displayed clearly through only using points , for my sketch of this idea I based the design off of the scales used in my own sheet music that I have. I adjusted the scale slightly as I thought it made the design look for interesting rather than having a lot of empty space.
