How the Extension Works
Local Processing
CEFR Reader performs all text analysis entirely on your local device:
- Text Analysis: When you activate the extension on a webpage, it analyzes the visible text content using local JavaScript code
- Vocabulary Matching: Words are matched against our local CEFR database (18,000+ words) stored within the extension
- Readability Calculation: Scores are calculated using local algorithms (Flesch-Kincaid, Lexile approximations)
- Display: Results are displayed immediately in your browser
No data leaves your browser during this process.
User-Initiated Dictionary Lookups
When you click on a highlighted word to view its definition:
- Only the specific word you click is sent to the Free Dictionary API (dictionaryapi.dev)
- This is a user-initiated action only
- No context or surrounding text is transmitted
- This service is used solely for word definitions
