"So many young trans people dream of being an actor and don't think it's possible because they're trans. There was a point where I almost gave up. Luckily, I didn't... I don't like the term 'role model', though. I prefer the term 'possibility model.'" - Laverne Cox
I came across this quote in a self-help book, of all places, and was really inspired by the term "possibility model" — because I believe that is the value of having friends and peers who are different from you. Laverne Cox said this in a long interview with Metro Weekly in 2013, soon after the second season of Orange is the New Black aired. Exposure to different backgrounds, ways of life, stories, etc. helps you envision different ways you can go through life, different possibilities for yourself and the world around you.
Ultimately, Plot Twisters wants to create a tool where storytellers can use their journey to envision a better future for themselves and their communities. The idea of "possibility modelling" ties together radical imagination with the importance of dialogue (with others and ourselves) that we've investigated through Freire and bell hooks. When we're able to see ourselves in the struggles and successes our friends, peers, and role models, we can patch the experiences we know into a future for ourselves that's more empathetic, fearless, and true to ourselves.
