In the Abagusii community in Kenya where I come from, the cultural dances and songs were done during circumcision festivals, during burial of the dead, harvesting seasons and marriage times . During circumcision of boys days, immediately after boys were circumcised men sang songs as women danced and ululated wearing traditional costumes like cows skins and banana leaves. The songs showed that that lads had become mature men not with full responsibility of being community warriors. But because of civilization now, the culture is almost being forgotten as circumcision is being done in hospitals by individual community members at will. The songs and dances have been forgotten because of the new generation of the young people who have even been brought up in towns. The cultural songs were important in that that passed a message of encouragement and hope to the young generation. Marriage songs made the bride to get ready for marriage responsibility. This happened during bride price negotiations. During burial of the dead, the cows and bulls were taken very far like 20 kilometers away during morning hours. In the afternoon when burial time got nearer, the men and young boys started driving cows home as they sang in honour of the late person. Young and old women lead them home as they yelled . After burial there was drumming accompanied with songs and dancing. Mourning for the dead was done in that way to honor the dead. A song like " Obori bwa baba ekeande", in Abagusii community was sang when we had a bumper harvest. Many resourceful people who could train this dances and songs have passed on making it hard to continue with the many old cultural practices in our country. We have had rural urban influx of many young people making most cultural practices to dead.
