Chapter 05: After the Trunk — Why the Questions Themselves Must Be Reordered**

“A real breakthrough is often not the act of answering every question at once, but finally knowing which questions must be asked first, and which must wait.”

By the time we arrive here, what has been completed is not a final explanation, but a reordering.

Up to this point, I have gradually pushed the Background Field from an intuitive philosophical object toward a structure that increasingly approaches physical language. I have reexamined $c$, spacetime, propagation, compensation, and screening, and I have also looked back at how I repeatedly struggled through a set of immature yet indispensable conjectural formulas until a more rigid trunk was finally forced out.

If one speaks only from emotion, this is exactly the stage at which a series of powerful impulses naturally arise.

If the trunk has already appeared, then should we not immediately go on to explain everything? Should we not at once begin handling dark matter, dark energy, redshift, black holes, and even more distant problems? Should we not take this opportunity to declare that the old framework has finally reached the point of being replaced as a whole?

And yet what slowly became clear to me was not that impulse, but another judgment, one more restrained and more important:

once a trunk appears, what changes first is often not the answers, but the order of the questions.

In other words, the most important work of the first paper is not to deliver every conclusion to the world, but to determine, among all the anomalies that can be pursued:

what must be done first, what can only be done later; what deserves to enter the trunk, what must remain at the edge for now; what is truly foundational, and what is only an illusion produced before the foundation is complete.
