Facts about PM Recruitment
Timeline
It typically starts around August and could go all the way till the beginning of summer.
Types of programs
- APM or RPM
- Program: rotational programs at big tech; small class size (~10, see apmlist.com); great support and community (social events, cohort travel, mentorship)
- Companies: Google, Linkedin, Facebook, Uber, Lyft...
- Recruitment: you're interviewing for the program, not a specific team; application opens usually for a short period of window around the same time every year
- Other entry-level PM positions
- Program: non-rotational position for a specific team; class size depends on headcount
- Companies: Microsoft, Oracle, Adobe...
- Recruitment: you're applying to or matched to a specific team during the application process, so you will talk to the hiring manager (your future manager) directly; application opens sporadically as headcount opens up
Application process
These are all the potential steps I've seen, but of course, the specific process/order depends on the program:
- Submitting application: resume + essays (sometimes)
- Recruiter screen: a short phone screen with recruiter, mainly behavioral
- Take-home assignments: answer a given prompt (e.g. improve the product you're interviewing for) with a doc or slide deck
- Product interviews: interviews with product managers/hiring manager
- Partner interviews (rare): interviews with your future cross-functional partners (engineers/designers/UX researchers/etc.)
My Recruitment Timeline
I didn’t get my first offer until March. Pretty scary, I know. But that’s one thing I learned from tech recruiting: good things take time, so don’t give up!
Fall 2020

Aug - Sep
I recruited for consulting mostly because of peer pressure and curioristy. Since there were only three companies (MBB) that I could apply to as an international student and I didn't really network, I only landed one interview and got rejected soon after 🤕

Sep - Oct
Started applying for PM positions (with referrals). Got the first interview at Microsoft pretty early on and prepared a ton since this was my first ever legit PM interview. First round was a 30-minute HR screen (behavioral + basic product sense), and final round was 4*1-hour back to back interviews with PMs on the same team (behavioral + product design + technical experience). Thought I did well but got rejected after 2.5 weeks. This was really a low point in recruitment because I did everything I could to prepare and Microsoft also recruits heavily from my school, so it felt like my chances elsewhere were even slimmer.
