Cafalon is the second largest city in Kalosia and the capital of the province of Galesku.
The city traces its origins back to the antiquity. The Cafalonii was a Celtic people that inhabited the area thousands of years ago until they underwent assimilation into the Roman Empire. A Roman settlement was built, Cafalonium, on which the modern-day Cafalon stands today.
It emerged as a centre of commerce in the late Medieval period and was an important hub for ships passing through the Gulf of Lion. The city entered its golden age during the Renaissance, where it became the intellectual centre of the island of Kalos. Cafalon was home to many of the brightest Kalosian minds of this era, as well as the University of Cafalon, the first academic institution in what is now Kalosia.
Today, Cafalon continues to be known as the nation's academic centre, and brands itself as the City of Ideas.
As a regional hub of northern Kalosia and a historic political and commercial centre, there is much to do in Cafalon. Explore the palaces of past kings and aristocrats, and enjoy the opportunity to dine like nobility during tea services at these mansions, overlooking the rest of the city. Have a stroll through the old town, where you can have a peek into the studios of the city’s finest artisans throughout the centuries. Or if you’d like something more contemporary, there are contemporary art museums and boutique galleries in the city, nestled between the skyscrapers and busy office buildings in the central business district.
For you nature-oriented folks, the beaches along Cafalon’s coast are a popular summer destination. And you can go for a hike in the forests and parks located just a quick drive outside city limits.
Hungry? Enjoy the local offerings at various cafés and restaurants along the streets of Cafalon. Cafalonesque cuisine is influenced by Italian and Provençal flavours, which means ingredients like garlic, peppers, and tomatoes are ubiquitous. Freshly baked flatbread and refreshing Mediterranean salads can be found at any establishment, paired with the finest wine. And don't even think about avoiding olive oil while you're here—you simply can't!
During the summer months, tourists and locals alike flock to the shores for a bit of sunshine, and seasonal seaside establishments allow you to enjoy the day's catch of seafood al fresco. The zesty taste of fish, bathed in citrusy flavours with a sprinkling of fresh herbs, pairs well with Fokaťë e aľoli, a common side dish consisting of flatbread slices served with a garlic dip.
With so many things to do, it's normal to not be able to tick everything off your to-do list with the limited time you have during your stay. But that's okay, it's never too late to plan your next visit to Cafalon!
