šŸŒ„ Lookout Mountain Trail

Lookout (10 minute drive to the trailhead) is arguably the most popular novice trail in Western North Carolina (Montreat map-kitchen table). It’s a 2.5 mile roundtrip hike with enough climbing challenge to make it interesting, with a gorgeous view of Black Mountain to the east and the Seven Sisters and the Blue Ridge Parkway to the west. Moderate hiking skills and fitness required. The last 100 yards is strenuous, difficult for small children.

ā›°ļø Pinnacle/Mt Mitchell Day trip:

This day trip is the most gorgeous 2 hr. hike and scenic drive combination in the region. 5-6hr round trip from Black Mountain (add another 1-2 hrs if you include visiting Mt Mitchel). 45 minute drive to Pinnacle trailhead once you get to the Parkway in Asheville. Directions to Pinnacle Trailhead– Follow your GPS on I-40 towards Asheville and follow the Blue Ridge Parkway to Mt. Mitchel. The parking area for Pinnacle trailhead is located 0.6 miles east from the entrance to the Mt. Mitchell State Park on the Blue Ridge Parkway (milepost 355). After passing the Mt Mitchel Park entrance, look for a dirt road on the south side of the Parkway with a gate across it. This is the old Mt. Mitchell Toll Road. Park on either side of the Parkway but do not block the gate. Walk through the gate and down the toll road a short way. The trail starts on the right and climbs a short bank and then proceeds up a ridge that runs parallel to the toll road. 1.5 m. round trip hike, gradual ascent but steeper at the top. The view from Pinnacle is unmatched. The drive from Asheville along the parkway is breathtaking. The Parkway is often closed for weather so call ahead. The temps at Mitchel on average are 10-20 degrees cooler than in Black Mountain.

🄾 Easy Hike with the Kids

Elizabeth’s Path/Montreat Gate trail: (see Montreat map-kitchen table) this is the most beautiful, easy access, nature trail run/walk within 5 miles, (2 mile rt)....At the Montreat gate, park in the dirt/gravel pkg area, north side of the gate. Cross the creek, turn left and start looking for the trail on your right (blue markings). The trail follows the ā€˜perfect for rock hopping’ Flat Creek to Lake Susan. Flat with very gradual climbs. Lake Susan in Montreat has a few gift shops, and a grill called The Huckleberry with ice cream. Usually open for lunch but check ahead.

šŸ’§ Waterfalls

There are great options in the area. Our closest waterfall, Catawba Falls, is our most accessible and popular trail, but check beforehand, because it is sometimes closed. The following website gives a variety of waterfalls in the area: https://www.romanticasheville.com/waterfalls.htm
