New Media in Illustration is a class for students to learn how to use contemporary technology in illustration through interactive media and animation.

OVERVIEW

We will be working in Quill for VR drawing, in Adobe Photoshop for hand-drawn animation, Adobe After Effects for vector animation, Twine for interactive fiction, and Stencyl for videogame design.

This is not just a tools class. Roman and Sophia are skilled conceptual and narrative illustrators, and we want your pieces to be strong on all fronts – not just in their use of technology. We will also be critiquing your piece's effectiveness in story, color, composition, design, and concept.

Each assignment will consist of a sketch phase during which ideas and designs are discussed, several workshop sessions to develop the project, and a final critique.

EXPECTATIONS

We hold our students to professional standards. Show up on time, behave respectfully in class, engage in critique of your classmates' work, and complete your assignments on time.

Please bring laptops, sketchbooks, and tablets to class every day.

Give your teachers and fellow students your full attention and do not engage in distracting behavior on your phones or computers.

Critique is an important component of the class and a big portion of your grade. If your work is being critiqued, present your ideas clearly and fully. If you are critiquing, give honest feedback and explain the reasons for your feelings about a piece. Be as specific and constructive as possible.

Students are graded on overall effectiveness of assignments, individual progress, professional demeanor, participation in critique, and timeliness.

A NOTE

Due to limited hardware, only 3-4 students can work on their VR drawing assignments at a time. We have divided the semester into 4 sections of 3 weeks. Students will decide when they want to work on their VR assignment, and complete it in the background of other coursework.
