However, sound waves propagate in all directions. Therefore, a two dimensional representation shows a section through the sound wave.

For example - two signal which have the same pressure add up to:

Absorbtion
happens when sound hits a boundary and the material transforms it so that its energy is reduced. The degree of absorption is expressed by a number between 0 and 1. We call it the absorption factor or absorption coefficient.
Reflection
a rebound reaction of sound after it hits a surface. The reflection coefficient is similar to the absorption coefficient. It indicates the strength of the reflection
