Question 4

  1. To what extent has ecotourism in Kenya promoted cultural exchange between the tourists and the Maasai communities?
  2. My RQ investigates how ecotourism in Kenya has allowed the Maasai communities to share their culture with the tourists. Ecotourism in Kenya supports conservation efforts, provides income for local communities and creates jobs. This allows the residents to earn an income and also share their culture with the tourists. This increases awareness and allows the Maasai people to be proud of their culture. In relation to the SOI, the RQ examines how global interactions of tourism can increase awareness and promote cultural exchange which can change identities and relationships.
  3. One limitation of using a GIS map is that while it can aid the investigation to show changes in tourist numbers, it does not explain the reasons behind the trends. It also does not show how they directly impact the culture and relationships of the Maasai communities which limits the depth of analysis and does not directly contribute to answering the RQ.
  4. Statistics from local government, journal articles on the society and communities.
  5. One challenge I could face in my investigation is bias in certain cources, as many tourism websites and reports often present ecotourism in a positive way. This can overlook the negative impacts on the Maasai communities and limit my investigation in terms of forming a balanced conclusion.

Question 6

  1. Deforestation is the greatest threat to forests. In the Amazon forest, deforestation causes significant biodiversity loss and environmental degradation. Deforestation is when trees are cut down at a faster rate than they can grow. This leads to habitat loss for many animal species within the biome. Some animals may also get caught in between the bulldozers and die. This causes major loss of biodiversity. Additionally, deforestation leaves the topsoil vulnerable to rain and wind without the interception from leaves and branches. This causes environmental degradation as it erodes the soil and increases flood risk. Compared to other human activities, deforestation has the most immediate and large-scale impact because it removes the foundation of the forest ecosystem, affecting both wildlife and indigenous communities who depend on it.
