In the world of Empty Sky, there are a large number of supernatural beings who interact with the world, each other, and humanity. Some of them, called spirits, are native to earth. Others, who tend to call themselves gods, are not originally of the world or are descended from those beings. The stories of how these beings have interacted in the past and how power has shifted between them over time inform the shape of the world and how the humans who interact with these beings view them.

The definition of myth gets a little fuzzier in fictional recon than in other religions, because “myth” only refers to a subset of the stories available. These are the stories that explain or illustrate concepts, that exist more to tell than to show, that are more about metaphysics than character development. In a project like the Empty Sky, they can include stories of the gods and spirits, stories about the elements, and so on. In other contexts, they might include origin stories or personally-relevant, resonant stories. Mythology can be highly personal to a fictional recon. It is what makes a story more than just a story, and that can vary a great deal from one person to the next.
