Before jumping into a very competitive game I think you should look at the winners of that game and decide if you want to be like them first.

A few other common things that create amazing things when mixed together:

1. Intelligence mixed with good communication.\

   There are a lot of smart people. There are a lot of good communicators. But there are few of both, and only when the two meet do good ideas gain the traction they deserve.

• People have vastly different desires, except for three things: Respect, feeling useful, and control over their time. Those are nearly universal.
• There’s a sweet spot where you grasp the important stuff but you’re not smart enough to be bored with it.
• It’s hard to tell the difference between boldness and recklessness, greed and ambition, contrarian and wrong.
• Emotions can override any level of intelligence.
• No one is thinking about you as much as you are.
• But all success is like an iceberg: what most of us see is a fraction of what happened. And it’s stripped of all the hard parts.

Managing employees requires giving them structure and oversight. Maintaining employees requires giving them freedom and autonomy.

• Being competitive requires giving work 100% of your effort. Being sustainably competitive requires enough rest and variety in your life to avoid burnout.
• Being focused requires tuning out the noise. Being informed requires reading as much as you can to ensure you don’t miss something important.
• Discipline requires following a strategy when you’re tempted to break the rules. Adaptability requires realizing when your rules have lost relevance.
• Having confidence means staying with an idea when it’s not going well. Having humility means abandoning an idea when it’s been proven wrong.
  • These all have a common denominator: They require you to be open-minded, question assumptions, and never become too comfortable.
