<aside> 📌 THE IDEA OF MINDFULNESS
In the Buddhist tradition, mindfulness (Pali: sati) is a foundational practice of moment-to-moment awareness. It involves cultivating clear attention to our present experience without getting caught up in judgments or reactions.
The Buddha taught mindfulness through the Four Foundations: awareness of body (kāya), feelings (vedanā), mind states (citta), and mental qualities (dhamma). Through careful observation of these aspects, practitioners develop insight into the nature of experience and reality.
This practice helps reveal the three marks of existence: impermanence (anicca), unsatisfactoriness (dukkha), and non-self (anatta). By maintaining steady mindfulness, we can see how all phenomena arise and pass away, leading to wisdom and liberation from suffering.
Mindfulness is not just about relaxation or stress reduction—though these may be beneficial side effects. Rather, it is a systematic training of attention and investigation that forms part of the Noble Eightfold Path leading to awakening.
