Overview

In lecture, lab, and homework, we've covered a variety of Figma mechanics and design principles through presentations and activities. However, the best way to learn design is by putting skills, tools, and concepts together into practice. For this midterm, we'd like for you to create a project about a local restaurant following one of five prompts.

Local businesses have always been core to our communities, whether that's in Berkeley, your hometown, or any other city in the world. Food and drink especially are a huge part any culture, not to mention our day-to-day lives. We've selected local restaurants as the topic of this project for a few primary reasons.

First, personal familiarity. select a business that you and people you know have personally been to. This way, you can conduct user research by understanding both your own experience and those of your friends and family.

Second, tangibility. For the sake of practice, much of the design practice we do is very hypothetical. By working with a real establishment, especially one you personally care about, you can more easily visualize real-world problems, needs, and solutions.

Third, community. Like previously mentioned, restaurants inherently create culture and a central meeting space. In your design process, be sure to not only consider the brick-and-mortar location and restaurant staff, but also the people who make up the surrounding community.

Our goal for this midterm is for you to see a project all the way through, from need-finding to final iterations. To provide structure, there are four defined prompts you can choose from, along with the option to submit your own project proposal, with requirements for each prompt.
