Treatment and Prevention of Adverse Childhood Experiences and Toxic Stress – Overview of Purpose

An overwhelming number of Californians grapple with health and social outcomes stemming from toxic stress caused by Adverse Childhood Experiences, also known as ACEs. ACEs are highly stressful and potentially traumatic experiences that can happen to any of us in our early years. As the state emerges from the collective trauma of human loss and suffering from the Covid-19 pandemic, Californians need access to clinical and community-based treatment, diagnostic, and preventive measures to address ACEs.

Governor Gavin Newsom's #CAComeback Plan includes a broad-based plan to transform California’s behavioral health system for children and youth into a world-class, innovative, and prevention-focused system where all children and youth are routinely screened, supported, and served for emerging and existing behavioral health needs. Governor Newsom proposes $12.4 million to launch community-driven projects focused on advancing research on, and building scalable approaches to, treating and preventing ACEs.

Spreading the Word

The Governor’s Office of Planning and Research (OPR) is raising awareness of this critical investment by Governor Newsom – necessary to support the health and wellbeing of the nearly 25 million Californians living with ACEs, particularly youth in under-served communities.

Help us demonstrate the importance of this investment by using this toolkit to inform Californians, legislators, and stakeholders.
