In order to deeply understand how a local precious plastics community could be integrated to our daily life, I've started researching what already exists locally in this field. I would like to have an answer for the following questions:
- How much plastics waste is produced each year in Israel?
- According to recent research by the DoEP it is estimated at 1.1M tons.
- What are the current methods of treatment to the various plastics waste types?
- What organizations are active locally?
- Collection
- TMIR - Orange bin, collection from urban waste. Operates a number of subcontractors.
- ELA - Plastic bottles (PET) collection bins
- Sorting
- Shredding
- Production from recycled plastics
-
Are there types of plastics that are not recycled locally at all?
- Legislation and government take on the matter?
- What happened to Aviv Recycling plant?
Local Legislation and plans
2011 law for packaging waste management

חוק להסדרת הטיפול באריזות - ויקיטקסט
- From a brief read of the legislation from 2011, this law was meant to transfer the responsibility of recycling of packaging waste (of all kinds) to the manufacturer and importer.
- But, it seems like the goals that were set for plastic packaging is low and also would not increase over the years.

From - https://he.wikisource.org/wiki/חוק_להסדרת_הטיפול_באריזות
- The law dictates that manufacturers and importers will pay a licensed treatment center for collection and recycling of the produced waste.
- In reality there is only one such center - TMIR - They handle collection and sorting of packaging waste.
