Example:

Cocoa, which is a primary ingredient in chocolate products, is a fruit that is rich in polyphenols, particularly flavonoids. It can improve cardiovascular health through the activation of nitric oxide and its antioxidant/anti-inflammatory effects.
A meta-analysis (31 studies; >1900 participants; mean duration=12 weeks) revealed that the consumption of the polyphenols in cocoa above the median of 479 mg effectively reduced total cholesterol levels (mean difference [MD] −8.35 mg/dL [−14.01 to −2.69]; p<0.001; I2=67.4%).
It can also lower LDL-C, fasting glucose levels, and blood pressure. Sadly, no significant effect on BMI and HbA1c.

Recent advances in lipid-lowering therapy include oral and injectable drugs like obicetrapib, enlicitide, and Lepodisiran, which significantly reduce LDL cholesterol and Lp(a) levels, offering new options for high-risk cardiovascular patients.
