Hey everyone!

We’re so excited because the School of Rocks is scaling to grow the community to new locations which is going to transform the lives and friendships of so many!

While this is exciting it also means we need to make sure it’s easy and simple for people to find their communities.

While whatsapp has been great in the early stages it gets harder and harder to help people find the correct join link and when they do join the chat they can’t see previous messages which can be a barrier to feeling included.

We already have a great community on Discord and the ‘Channels’ feature makes it easy to see all the different school locations, what the schools are up to and tap into the wider community for advice on kit or just see what events people are going to.

We know that whatsapp is super familiar to use which is why people still use this over Discord. As we get ready for the new term and even more schools we have decided that to make our community as inclusive and easy to find we need to push all School of Rocks communication on to Discord.

This means by the end of January we will close all whatsapp groups. We’re sad to close them but we think we need to do this in order to make sure that Discord becomes the place where our community lives.

Message to all WhatsApp Groups:

Hey,

We’ve got a little announcement to make. In order to get things running smoothly as the School of Rocks gears up for the new term we’re going to move all communications over to Discord. As we grow to over 15 locations lots of whatsapp groups gets hard to manage, they’re tricky for new members to find and make it hard for info to flow between groups. Luckily, we already have a solution! Hopefully some of you have already joined our Discord server, if not hit the link below!

Discord is a handy messaging platform, you can install it as an app on your phone or access it through a browser. There are text channels for local schools as well as school wide topics like kit recommendations, amazing routes and trips to try. We’ve linked some helpful articles below for getting started and personalising your notifications.

In order to make sure all School communications lives on Discord and we don’t default to familiarity we will be closing the whatsapp groups at the end of the month.

Discord is super easy to use. 📲 You can download it as an app or access it through a browser.

🔔 You can set alerts for your channels and snooze the ones you don’t need alerts for 📆  Discord supports calendar events so you can make it easy to schedule rides 🗺  You can set up threads and new channels for stuff that is happening e.g. Cardiff are organising a bikepacking weekend but you live in Bristol and want to get involved. Well now you can!
