- Malaysia Inflation Rate**Malaysia Consumer Prices Fall the Least in 3 Months**Consumer prices in Malaysia dropped by 1.4 percent year-on-year in December 2020, after declining 1.7 percent in the previous month and in line with market consensus. This was the tenth straight month of deflation but the softest pace since September, amid ongoing COVID-19 disruption, as prices fell softer for both transport (-8.4% vs -11.1% in November), and clothing prices (-0.4% vs -0.5%), while that of housing decreased by 3.3% (the same as in November). Also, cost of restaurants & hotels fell 0.2% (after a flat reading in November), with that of furnishings, household equipment and routine maintenance edged down 0.1%, after being flat in November. Meantime, prices rose further for food (1.4% vs 1.4%), alcoholic beverages & tobacco (0.6% vs 0.5%), education (0.6% vs 0.6%), miscellaneous goods & services (2.2% vs 2.3%), and recreation services & culture (0.2% vs 0.1%). - Japan Inflation Rate**Japan Deflation Intensifies**Japan's consumer prices declined 1.2 percent year-on-year in December of 2020, after falling 0.9 percent in the previous month, as the pandemic continued to drag consumption heavily. The decline was bigger than expected and was the sharpest since April of 2010. Prices were mainly dragged by utilities (-6.1 percent vs -5.4 percent in November), food (-0.8 percent vs -0,2 percent), education (unchanged at -2.2 percent), transportation & communication (-1.3 percent vs -1.1 percent), and culture & recreation (-4.0 percent vs -3.8 percent). Meanwhile, prices for medical care fell again by a softer 0.4 percent compared to -0.5 percent. On a monthly basis, consumer prices dropped 0.3 percent after declining 0.5 percent. Core consumer prices, which exclude fresh food, dropped 1.0 percent on the year.
- New Zealand Inflation Rate**New Zealand Inflation Rate Still at 1.4%**The annual inflation rate in New Zealand remained unchanged at 1.4 percent in the fourth quarter of 2020, well above market expectations of a 1 percent increase. It was the lowest inflation rate since the first quarter of 2018, amid the coronavirus pandemic. Non-tradable inflation jumped 2.8 percent after increasing 2.6 percent in the year to September. Prices of housing and household utilities increased 2.6 percent, with rentals up 2.9 percent. Meanwhile, food prices rose 2.5 percent, with prices of fruit and vegetables surging 8.6 percent. Also, liquor & tobacco inflation was recorded at 6 percent, with prices of cigarettes up 11 percent. On the flip side, transport prices decreased 3.7 percent, dragged by lockdowns and an 8.1 percent drop in private transport supplies and services. - Hong Kong Inflation Rate**Hong Kong Consumer Prices Fall For 6th Month**Hong Kong consumer prices fell 0.7 percent from a year earlier in December of 2020, marking the sixth straight month of deflation amid subdued demand conditions. Downward pressure came from prices of electricity, gas and water (-30 percent); clothing and footwear (-5.9 percent); durable goods (-2.6 percent); transport (-2.1 percent) and miscellaneous services (-0.1 percent). On the other hand, prices increased for food, excluding meals bought away from home (2.2 percent), alcoholic drinks and tobacco (1.7 percent), miscellaneous goods (1.4 percent) and housing (0.3 percent). Meantime, cost was flat for meals bought away from home. - Canada Inflation Rate**Canada Inflation Rate Unexpectedly Eases to 0.7%**Annual inflation rate in Canada slowed to 0.7% in December of 2020 from 1% in November, which was the highest since February of 2020. Figures came below forecasts of 1%, mainly due to lower air transportation prices (-14.5%) amid falling demand. Also, food inflation slowed to 1.1%, the lowest reading since May of 2018, amid favourable weather conditions in growing regions in the United States and Mexico which contributed to the increased supply of fresh fruit and vegetables.
