Valuing Our Voices

hooks entire thesis in this book focuses on how traditional teaching structures subvert education's power to free people. Therefore, in order to create classrooms that create freedom, educators must employ certain strategies that subvert classroom bulwarks. Classrooms are not designed to be comfortable for everyone and intentionally elevate some voices above others. hooks breaks this paradigm by having all of her students keep journals regarding their learning experience, and sets aside one of the first classes for everyone to share their responses. Even if students choose not to speak up for the rest of class, this experience ensures that everyone is heard at least once and creates a communal understanding of their classmates contexts.

For June 29, please reflect and respond to one of the following prompts. We will all share an excerpt (250 words at least) with the group.
