checking your jp level
apps & plugins
- the infamous duolingo. it's not very thorough, they don't actually explain grammar structure at all, its sentence examples are almost always in polite form without any explanation, and finishing its japanese course won't make you fluent, but it's fun and can be pretty good for vocabulary absorption or daily vocabulary drills, especially if you're just starting out. (i've heard it's excellent for other language like Spanish and German though)
- apk of bunpo, like duolingo but with more specific lessons (grammar, vocabulary, divided by each JLPT level). the actual app is premium, so if you don't want to pirate it's available on appstore as well
- in the folder, i also put other resources
- rikaichan — shows the reading and english definition of japanese word when you hover over any japanese text in the browser. available for firefox.
- the chrome alternative: rikaikun
- the safari alternative: safarikai (i use this one!)
- anki — flashcard program using spaced repetition technique. you can make your own deck, or use premade ones or what other people have made. there are many choices of apps. personally i use this one on my laptop and this one on my phone
- this deck is the one i use mainly on my laptop, complete with audio and example sentences
resources
- from engjpdiscordexchange:
- masterlist on github
- the google drive of files, has textbooks, audiobooks, visual novels in separate folders. there’s one folder titled cloud’s resource folder inside that has all those and more, so do check that as well
- review of japanese textbooks so you know which one to choose
- by tofugu (beginner)
- personal review: i'm fairly new and beginner at japanese, currently i'm using japanese the manga way and it's pretty good so far (textbook is packed with info + design is not boring, which is important for me haha). my friend, who's more advanced (N3 level) has been using nihongo sou matome (handy, interesting design, packed full with info in 3 languages jp eng and chn) and shin kanzen master (packed full with info, but feels very textbook-y) [all books mentioned are in the google drive link above]
- summarization of genki 1 & 2 (textbook) grammar lessons in poster form on reddit
- japanese learning resource from 4chan's /int/ guide
- japanese with anime - found this website recently, they're pretty good
