We need to upgrade governance
We need to improve how we make decisions in member-driven associations.
What is as member-driven association?
Chances are you have been part of a one.
There are many different types.
And they all take direction from their members. Well, at least they are supposed to.
See, their traditional governance work like this...
Members have an election to select a few people to serve on a Board of directors, who hire and supervise an Executive who runs the organization in service of the members.
The Board approves policies and plans for the organization, which are most often written ****by the Executive.
In theory, elections democratically select excellent representatives for the board, who then make timely and wise decisions.
But in reality, elections are an unreliable relic of a system. It's either a popularity contest or uncontested, with no vote required.
