Context & Project Definition

Context

The Fringe festival is the largest arts and culture festival on the planet. The three-week festival takes place every August all throughout the city of Edinburgh. The 2018 Fringe festival attracted 450,000 viewers to see one or more of its 3,398 shows (EFFS, 2019). Despite the large variety of performances, many people, including those that live in Edinburgh do not attend a single show. This suggests that barriers preventing people from committing their time to visit a show, may exist.

The Data driven design approach requires both understanding of the project context and access to data related to the context. For this project we have access to the edinburgh festival API, providing access to the Fringe festival event listings. These listings contain information regarding event titles, genres, descriptions, price, timing and location. (Festivals E, 2019)

Our Interests

We approached this project with three key interests; digital animacy, informed decision making and immersive experiences, which were used to guide our design decisions.
