Insights

(Here is the draft)

Insights
Research stage 1. Most students incline to ask others (peers, cohorts, friends, or advisor) for help in terms of what kind of electives they should take
  1. Some students are more willing to take courses recommended by advisors or faculty members (maybe because of credibility?); while sometimes the turnout isnt what the students were expecting
  2. Students are willing to go to ECT student website for the list of electives to take for their specializations, while many of them have been reporting that the list isn’t up to date | | Decision making stage | 1. Albert is where most students learn details about the electives from. Some students think Albert isnt one of the most usable tools while they have to use it for registration anyways
  3. Alternatively some students use AirTable as ways to plan out the schedule, but only constraining to the electives on the AirTable
  4. Some students choose to go to the advisors or ask friends what they think about the electives, or if the electives they are thinking about are the “right” ones
  5. Some students choose to audit the electives for now and try them out to find out if they would like to take or not | | Registration, enrollment and finalizing schedule stage | 1. Students find it tough to register for out-of-ect electives because of several reasons: unknown expectations of the course-load, professors, learning outcomes, and procedural concerns (not sure about how to register, who to ask for permission, what are the pre-requirement, when to register) or simply couldn’t register at all.
  6. Students run out of time to finalize the electives that they really like/want (not really planning out the schedule wisely) | | Learning gap: Communication gap | 1. Students need communities of practices of peers of same interests or skillsets to share insights and talk about elective selections
  7. Students wish they can hear more from the peers about the tips and tricks of registration instead of making assumptions themselves
  8. The need of some sort of interactive activities such as a Slack channel, workshop, seminar or point of references to discuss about the course selections when registration comes close | | Learning gap: knowledge gap | | | Learning gap: Environment gap | 1. In need of references about the electives themselves, which can be:
  1. Guidance in planning out the electives to take through the semesters which students can benefit the most from in terms of career goals
  2. Students need reminders and explanations on a dedicated web page or introduction of registering for out-of-ect electives, or available resources ECT has at the moment | | Tools | 1. Students tend to like Airtable, while the concerns are:
  1. ECT student website career path page and specialization page are also of the most used references, while same concerns as previous:
  2. Albert not the most intuitive tool to use
  3. Advisors in general do not provide enough useful information
  4. Course planner is something that is standard to use in ECT provided by the advisor while students do not make good use of them
  5. Friends and other cohorts can be very informative to ask around, while the concern is who to go and where to ask |
