The Add-on kit is only needed if you use a custom layout such as ortho, some ergo layouts, or 40%. You will need both the Core and Add-on kits to cover these layouts. One way to tell is if your keyboard needs a 1.25u shift key or you use split space. Otherwise you would only buy the Add-on kit if you want the onigiri, sleeping cat Enter, or Infinikey logo novelty keyscaps.
