Setting the Stage for UW/UX to grow beyond Waterloo

Written by Joe Li

With the world going remote, everything from schools to workplaces were forced into a period of adjustment. This sentiment was especially true for the University of Waterloo's UX design organization, UW/UX.

Problem

As a student club, our organization was largely reliant on hosting in-person, on-campus events. When adjusting how our team traditionally operated into an online format, the challenge of figuring out how to effectively engage with and serve our community became a core challenge that our team wanted to solve and improve upon.

Audience

A key consideration in transitioning was understanding our audience — the UW/UX demographic primarily consisted of UW students looking to enter design, followed by students who have industry experience through internships.

As a team, we had to decide what the future of our organization looked like — do we continue serving the UW community exclusively, or could we scale the UW/UX brand beyond the bubble we set for ourselves? We went with the latter, as we saw the opportunity to grow and offer resources to a larger audience, further developing the community with students across Canada and beyond.

With the goals to engage with and serve the existing community, as well as to expand organizational reach, our team was set on running an initiative that exceeded the scope of events we had run in the past. We wanted to move beyond individual talks, workshops focused on craft, and industry panels to host a memorable speaker series that could set a precedent for future large events.
