If you witness a situation where a person is being physically or verbally attacked, put your body there. Your White physical presence has power. Be the one to yell at the assailants, or video record them (even police), or physically protect the victim, or help the victim post-attack.
Although this video by Berna was in response to the rise of anti-Asian hate crimes in February 2021, the message she shares is applicable to a lot of other kinds of bullshit:
"Signal boost to your people [your community]. We humans are just simple, community-based creatures and we teach each other in our actions and in our words how to feel about things. We copy the opinions and feelings of people who look like us, who talk like us, who we respect. So you literally tell your community how to feel. You have that power.
So non-Asian friends, I need you to very very clearly tell your people: This is wrong. We don't do this. This needs more coverage. That's it.
How? Post and repost stories and news articles, send to your family group chats, college friends group chats, email chains with coworkers... and explicitly say with your words: 'Y'all heard about this? This is wrong. We don't do this. This needs more coverage.' Tag your local and national news outlets and blow up their notifications..."
Whatever room you are in or table you are at, look around and ask yourself "Who is missing? Whose voice is not being represented?" Always look for the story that is not being told or the voice that is not being heard.
If a traumatic event happened and you know about it, email your team and make space for the person who may be affected by the trauma. Or if the person affected does speak up, be the one to hold space for them.

<aside> 🔔 "Know the difference between processing space and educating space.
Both are necessary. When people are going through a crisis and are grieving, reserve the 1-1 space to hold space (process, listen, etc). When you are with folks outside of the community that's hurting, prioritize that space to educate and to help connect the dots so people can be moved to action.
What I see happening a lot is people trying to educate people who are in crisis, whose immediate need is to be seen and heard. This is not only hurtful but it is ineffective.
Use your discernment based on context to show up for people you care about while advocating for change.
