Troubleshooting Checklist

1. Basic Connectivity Checks

• [ ] Check the interface is up.

• [ ] Ping: Test if the router can reach its next hop or peer.

  • If ping fails, check cabling, interface status, and IP addressing.

  

• [ ] Traceroute: Identify the path packets take and where they fail.

• [ ] Check all interfaces: Look for interfaces that are "down" or "administratively down".

  • Only g0/0 should be up/up in this scenario.

• [ ] Check for errors, drops, speed/duplex mismatches, or hardware faults.

• [ ] Fun fact: RJ45 (copper) interfaces don’t display optical light levels—swap in a fiber/SFP module to see live optical signal readings from the hardware!

2. IP Addressing & Routing Check

• [ ] Verify IP configuration on all relevant interfaces.

• [ ] Check routing table: Ensure correct next hops and networks are present.
