Hypokalemia
Causes of Hypertension & Hypokalemia
HTN + HYPOkalemia
1st step is to check Renin and aldosterone.
If BOTH are ELEVATED:
Secondary hyperaldosteronism
- Renovascular hypertension
- Malignant hypertension
- Renin-secreting tumor or reninoma - benign juxtaglomerular cell neoplsms
- Diuretic use
If Aldosterone is elevated and Renin is low/suppressed:
Primary hyperaldosteronism (Conn's syndrome)
- Aldosterone-producing tumor
- Bilateral adrenal hyperplasia or adrenal adenoma
If BOTH renin & aldosterone are LOW:
Non-aldosterone causes:
- Congenital adrenal hyperplasia
- Deoxycorticosterone-producing adrenal tumor
- Cushing syndrome
- Exogenous mineralocorticoids
